Khan Academy Kurriculum Komes to Rockford, IL

Salman Khan exploded his academic educational achievements onto the world stage when Bill Gates endorsed his curriculum.   Mr. Gates enthusiastically spoke about American education and spoke of the efforts of Mr. Khan.  Together they have produced a remarkably progressive series of materials for mathematics, science and the humanities.

At Allegro Academy in Rockford, IL, the Kahn math curriculum has been used this year by 8th grade students; each using a laptop.  After logging-in, they receive individual assignment lessons, progress at their ability, receive a test and either move on to more advanced material, or are reviewed before a retest.  Their teacher can log-in to see where they’re at in their lessons and see where they may need personal help to learn a concept.  We have seen remedial students working next to honors students; each being challenged to learn at their own ability.  Their enthusiasm was reflected by a frequent preference to skip recess in favor of continuing to work on math!

Elsewhere, Mr. Khan explained an overview of his program in a lighthearted, but informative manner at the 2011 TED.  Each student learns independently and can be monitored by their teacher.  When appropriate, the teacher can step in to assist with concepts the student may be struggling with.

It frees teachers to do something remarkable in their classroom: teach!
